Simultaneous Crossover Adjustment for Contemporary Altimeter Missions

چکیده

Since some time several altimeter satellites are operating simultaneously (ENVISAT, Jason-1, ERS-2, GFO, TOPEX/Poseidon). The large number of nearly simultaneous crossover events are used to estimate in a common adjustment radial error components of all altimeter missions. A discrete representation is used for the radial error components by minimizing both, crossover differences and consecutive differences. Differences with larger time delay are downweighted and the relative influence between crossover and consecutive differences is balanced. The discrete approach has a rank defect of one which is solved by constraining the sum of all error components of the “reference” mission to zero. Relative range biases are obtained for all but the reference mission. Statistics of crossover differences before and after the adjustment verify the estimated errors.

Ers Orbit Determination and Gravity Field Model Tailoring: Recent Developments

In the last ten years significant advances have been made in gravity field modelling, culminating in general-purpose models like JGM-3, TEG-3 and EGM96. Significant defects remain in the quality of the models when applied to orbit determination of some altimeter satellites, leading to large orbit errors, characterised by the geographically-correlated nature of the altimeter crossover height dif...

Potential of Ers-1 Derived Orthometric Heights to Generate Ground Control Points for Absolute Orientation of Imagery and Dem Quality Evaluation

Though the ERS satellites are today out of service, the huge quantity of altimetric data collected during the so-called “geodetic missions” covers the globe with sufficient density for many mapping projects. This paper first describes the general principle of ERS altimetric measurement . Then, the paper shows the method adopted to take advantage of ERS high-energy measurements (specular), which...

Comparison of microwave radiometer brightness temperature over a hot reference area

Nadir-looking microwave radiometers are flown on different altimeter missions to correct the altimeter range for water vapor and cloud liquid water path delay in the troposphere. Actually four sensors, TOPEX, JASON-1, ERS2, and ENVISAT micro-wave radiometers (MWR) provide continuous measurements and the aim of this paper is to compare their measured brightness temperatures over the same hot ref...
